The Faculty View on Internships
Hello everyone,
The beginning of the fall semester is a good time to think about one of the most valuable experiences you might have as a college student: the internship. An internship is a kind of work experience for people who are still in training in a particular field. In my department at Plymouth State University, students can gain three credits toward graduation for participating in an internship experience. Most of our students who do this do not get paid for the internship, although paid internships do exist. Students sometimes seem surprised that I recommend that they engage in an internship during the summer or part-time during the winter even though they will likely not be paid. I make this recommendation because there are many things besides financial compensation to be gained from completing an internship.
An internship will allow you to gain work experience in your field, which will likely pay off when you put that experience on your resume after graduation. Employers will look for prior experience in the field, even for entry-level jobs. In addition, when you work in your chosen field, you might realize that it is not actually one that will make you happy. I have seen a fair number of students change their minds about what they want to major in after they’ve completed an internship. Finally, you will meet people in your field, who are doing work that you want to do. These people can give you valuable advice and serve as a network for you when you finally do go out to find a job.
Start thinking about internships now, early in the school year, so you can set one up for your winter break, for next semester, or for next summer. It’s never too early to start.

I love this Cathie! It’s so important for students in both high school and college to take advantage of opportunities outside the classroom. If you’re in high school, it’s never too early to start doing free work. If you’re in college, visit your career office and go beyond your graduation requirements for internships. To many students look at only applying to their dream internship, make sure to cast a giant net, more will hopefully come available and give you choices in building your future.
