Financially Preparing for College

Hi,

As we all know, students must academically prepare for college years before they even fill out an application.  “Study hard”, “Do the extra credit work”, “Take challenge courses” are phrases that you have heard time and time again as you’ve made your way through high school.  Doing these things will prepare you for college;  but that’s just the academic piece.  Have you prepared financially as well?  It’s never too early to begin discussing how you plan to meet the rising cost of college.  Some families made the decision long ago to go this route or that route, but perhaps that’s not the most financially savvy route for your family.  Here is an article that can help you plan for college costs if your student is 8 or 18.  Read about your options, become informed and then choose what will work best for your family.  There is no “right” way to fund college, and no one college that is “right” for you.  Resist the urge to focus on what other people are choosing; make the choice that’s best for you!

Start researching today,
Val

Great point Val! Sitting down and doing a family budget might help students and parents to see how much they can realistically contribute toward one year of college. This can help you to know what your bottom line is.

Val great blog! This spring my grandparents surprised me with a check for college! They have been saving for years in a 529 account and are helping out with UNH for next year. I still have loans, but with their help it's less I need to pay out of pocket... Everyone should read your blog it's been a lot of help this year!! Thanks for your help, Go Heat!!
