City Year – A Gap Year Opportunity!

Are you graduating from high school this spring and aren’t quite sure that you want to jump right into college this fall?  Well here’s an option for you!  City Year is a program that requires a year-long commitment and is targeted specifically towards those between the ages of 17 and 24.  City Year is a member of AmeriCorps, and is one of the largest AmeriCorps programs in the country.  This program has been credited with helping students stay in school and on track, and if selected to be part of the program you would serve as a tutor, mentor and role model to children within the school district you are assigned to.  Some of the benefits of being part of this wonderful program include: developing strong leadership skills, building a sense of pride and creating life-long friendships.

To view the different service locations, read about the requirements to participate, as well as receive answers to many other frequently asked questions, please visit www.cityyear.org/faq.aspx The final application deadline to be considered for this opportunity is Sunday, May 15th.  However, there are a limited number of positions available in New Hampshire, as well as across the country, so it is recommended that you apply as soon as possible.  Apply at www.cityyear.org/applynow

Until next time,
Val

Thanks for the tips. I love the idea of a gap year but I didn't know where to start or what is available.

I was not ready for college, and wanted to take a year and play hockey for a semi-pro league. I am so glad I did it but I missed the comeraderie of a school team. Everyone just went their separate ways after practices and games, and there was a pretty broad age span. I am now registered to attend college in the Fall and will be on the hockey team!

City Year is a fantastic program! I have talked to many students that were unsure about what they wanted to study, and the city year experience helped them to focus when they started the school the following year... Highly recommended!
