How Much Time Does the Average College Student Study?

All students have different study habits and perhaps students with particular majors may spend more time than others reading their textbooks, completing labs or finishing a term paper.  A recent study using data from the American Time Use Survey found that overall, the average 18 year-old student spent 2.8 hours per day going to class and doing homework.  The survey found that the average 18-24 year-old full-time college students spent their time in the following way: 9 hours sleeping, 3.9 hours for education (including class time and outside homework time), 3.9 hours for sports and leisure activities, 1 hour eating and .8 hours grooming.  For the full article, click here.

Do those numbers surprise you?  Do you think that they sound accurate?  We want you to weigh in.

Until next time,
Val

This is an interesting, and thought provoking, article. I don't think all of those numbers are accurate, though, at least not amongst the students at my college. I'd say most students sleep anywhere between 5-8 hours, depending on what year they are, what their daily schedules are like, and which part of the semester they are in. I also think that it's completely unrealistic to think that students spend only 1 out of 24 hours eating. Of course, I could be wrong; I am just making assunptions based on my past four years of experience.

Val, this was definitely an interesting article. Like Kendra, I was a little surprised at the average number of hours college students were reported to be sleeping. I don't remember having that many hours of sleep in my 4 years as an undergraduate student. Also, in my experience, it seems like students at my campus spent more than the average 2.8 hours per day going to class and studying. And I absolutely agree with Kendra that it seems very unrealistic that only 1 out of every 24 hours is spent eating. That was not my experience at all! My friends and I certainly enjoyed spending time eating and chatting in the dining hall or student center. It would be interesting to hear from some other college students on this issue.
