Test Dates Are Approaching Fast!

I’ve been speaking with a lot of students lately and when I do I always ask if they have taken their SAT’s and/or ACT’s yet.  Half of the time the answer is no and when I follow up with my next question as to whether or not they have registered for the next available test date, I am often told that they have thought about it but hadn’t actually gotten around to doing it yet.

Seniors…as time goes by, the opportunity to take these tests this year decreases!  There are some available dates this spring, but keep in mind that many colleges will want this information soon.  The next SAT test date is January 22, 2011 (with a registration deadline of December 23, 2010) and the next ACT test date is February 12, 2011 (with a registration deadline of January 7, 2011).

To register, visit www.collegeboard.com  (for the SAT) and www.actstudent.org  (for the ACT).  Even if you are not thinking that college is in your immediate future, it is always beneficial to take them now while the subject material is fresh in your mind.  You never know what your future plans may hold, and having to sit down to take the tests in 5 or 10 years may prove harder than completing the tests now and knowing that you can draw upon the results any time you need them.

If you would like to watch a video of our Know the Score Presentation (outlining tips for standardized testing), click here and scroll down to find the right video or you can periodically check on our site to see when we will be offering it in our Concord office.

Does anyone that has taken the tests have any tips that you can offer those about to take it for the first time?  We have some tips to the SAT and some tips to the ACT  but it would be great if you could share your first-hand test-taking knowledge!

Good luck!
Val

Tests are an important part of the college application proces- whether the student like it or not. So, register for the test, take them a second time, and practice one question a day. A little bit of practice will indeed go a long way.

I agree with Brian. A little practice WILL go a long way. Half the battle with the standardized tests is understanding the instructions and the format of the questions. You don't want to be wasting precious time reading and rereading instructions when you could be answering the questions. Practicing...even just one or two questions a day...can help you to understand the format of the test. You can go to the SAT or ACT websites and register for the "question of the day". Make an attempt to read your emails each day and answer these questions. It's great practice!
