The Wonders of Winter Break

Hey, Bloggers:

Can you believe Winter break is right around the corner? I know I’m definitely looking forward to some time off from school. I can’t wait to be with my family during the holidays, to hang out with my friends and laugh about the good old times, to go snowboarding and drink hot chocolate. Yup, vacation time is almost here and I couldn’t be more ready! But, now that I’m really starting to think about it, the last two weeks are always so boring. So what can we do to make those last few weeks extra fun before the new semester begins? I’ve come up with a few ideas (and none of them include working at a part-time job—that’s just a part of life):

The first idea I have is to play some winter sports. Some of these sports might include ice skating (indoor/outdoor), ice hockey (indoor/outdoor), skiing, snowboarding (my favorite), sledding, or having a snowball fight with friends. Or, if those types of sports don’t interest you, you could always do other things like building a snowman, going ice fishing, or even going snow shoeing. There are so many things you can do outdoors to make winter fun, and the end of your vacation super exciting, all you have to do is find the motivation to go outside and play!

I realize, though, that going outside in the cold, and doing activities that might require a lot of physical strength and stamina aren’t exactly going to be everyone’s cup of tea. So my second idea is to do some indoor activities that keep your mind stimulated. You could play board games like Sorry!, Monopoly, or Quelf; you could bake cookies, a cake, or brownies (Mmm); you could even watch movies or catch up on some of your favorite TV shows that you’ve missed. I know those are some of my favorite things to do when I’m bored. But if those don’t suit your preference there are always video games to play, books and blogs to read, songs to download and listen to, and pets to be played with. The list of things you can do inside on a cold winter day is endless!

I suppose there is always the chance that you’re the type of person that likes to be indoors, but you don’t like to be inside the doors of your own home. So my third and final idea is for indoor activities outside of the home. You can go to an arcade, grab a bite to eat, or shop at a mall; you could volunteer at an animal shelter or a nearby soup kitchen, go see a movie, or visit a pet shop. One of the best things to do is play with all of the electronic devices at places like Brookstone and Best Buy, but that’s just me. No matter what you choose, though, it’s bound to be more fun than doing nothing at all.

Remember everyone: those last two weeks of vacation don’t have to be a drag. There are hundreds of things you can do when you’re bored if you really think about it; and I’ve only named a few of them. Go outside and embrace the snow, stay inside and soak up the warmth, or get out and stay inside at the same time—whatever you prefer! The excitement of winter break doesn’t have to end unless you want it to. So, call up your friends, your relatives, your boyfriends/girlfriends—whoever—and have some fun!

Good luck on your finals everyone!

Until next time,
Kendra

Great post with lots of great ideas! One other thing you can do early on in break so you don't stress over school work that's due is to make a list. List all the things that will need to be done by the time you get back from break or after that point, that way you don't stress about forgetting anything. Have a great break!

Kendra, I can't believe you're encouraging people to be the ones to just go and "play" with the electronics at the stores. Those people annoy the heck out of me..haha..anyways, love the first couple suggestions of drinking some hot chocolate, watching some holiday movies, and enjoying time with the ones closest to you..have a great break!

Great points on enjoying that winter break! Those are some great ideas. I know that I always miss it as soon as school starts again. One thing I try to do is get all my doctor's appointments, car maintenance, etc. out of the way so I don't have to deal with that when I am back at school.

Hi All! More ideas for winter break!

Ask around during New Years ... You MUST have some friends that are returning early to school for the winter semester/break to take a class! Maybe not YOUR school, but even better, one of your friends' colleges you have not had a chance to visit yet! Go visit them and get a feel for their campus. Things will be more relaxed and less crowded, and that friend would probably LOVE to have a visitor!! It is so much easier to pay a visit when you do not have to rush out on Sunday and arrange transportation back to your own school!
