New Age College Recruiting
Gone are the days of only being recruited through viewbook catalogs and pretty pictures. Do colleges still print them? Sure. Will colleges still send them to you? Absolutely. But Admissions Offices have found a different venue for advertising all that their campus has to offer. According to a recent article in The Seattle Times titled, “Your College Choice Virtually in Your Hand” more and more colleges are beginning to find different ways to get their college into the minds and hands of prospective college students. So how are they doing that you may ask? They are coming live to you through apps in your cell phone, webinars online and virtual self-guided campus tours. Will these techniques ever fully take the place of brochures and student-lead tours? Not likely. But the hope is that they will intrigue a student and their family enough to want to learn more about their school.
What do you think? Have you listened to a professor give a lecture online? Have you downloaded the app on your phone that will tell you about the different buildings as you walk around a campus of interest? And if you haven’t, would you like to? As a prospective student, how do you think Admissions Offices can best reach out to you?
Until next time,
Val

These online tools are great for schools that are very far away from home and difficult to visit. The ability to tour a dorm room online or chat with an admissions person is a great help.

Hi Val - what an interesting blog and article! As a parent, all of this technology being used as part of the college application process is really so different from how I applied - and attended - college. Really cool ideas!
Thanks for the post -

A campus tour via a college app- now that is a really interesting idea. It would allow parents and students a lot of flexibility to visit campuses- perhaps on holidays or the evenings, when admission staff is typically not working. It will be interesting to see how popular these apps are over the next few years.

Hi All! Just don't ever commit to attend a college before getting physically on campus at least once! It would be like your parents buying a house by looking only online at virtual tours, photos, decriptions and stats!
