Do Not Fear the College Interview

(written by Val, College Outreach Specialist at the Center for College Planning)

Good morning bloggers,

As summer vacation reaches its mid-point (can you believe that it’s half-way over??) we have been receiving more and more phone calls with questions regarding college interviews: do students need to have them, how they set them up, some tips to help with the process, etc. which made me realize that we should probably discuss it openly so that everyone can benefit from the conversation.

Some students are nervous to meet with an Admissions Representative and give a formal interview; I know I was.  It’s a different experience to sit down in front of someone else and basically explain to them why you would be a great addition to their campus.  Don’t get me wrong, by no means are the Admissions people drilling you for information, in fact they are really interested in having a conversation with you about you and their school.  However, it’s a learned art to talk about yourself and your accomplishments without sounding arrogant.  It’s okay to share information about the service project you spear-headed, or the math team that you lead to victory.  Many of us have been taught to be modest and not focus on our successes, and while it is true that you do not want to come off sounding like you think you are the best at everything, the interview is a time to advocate for yourself.  Give yourself the credit that you deserve!

I found an article that gives helpful tips for the college interview.  The biggest tip that I can give; practice and be yourself!  Don’t go into the meeting trying to be someone that you think the representative wants to meet with, let your personality shine through!

At the Center for College Planning, we are offering a session dedicated to learning about the College Interview as well as a chance to practice a Mock Interview tomorrow, July 15.  If you are interested in signing up for it, please visit our website.

Do you think the tips in the article are helpful?  What are your concerns about having a college interview?  Those of you that have already gone through this process, do you have any advice for rising seniors?

Practice makes perfect,
Val
