To Clean or Not To Clean?
(written by Val, College Outreach Specialist at the Center for College Planning)
Hi bloggers,
As some of you prepare to go off to college and others of you are beginning to research your college options, you may be wondering who cleans what in your dorm. Does the college offer cleaning services? What exactly will these cleaning services entail? Do you need to bring your own cleaning supplies?
Every college is different, and not to sound redundant, sometimes things can change within the four years that you are at your college. When I first entered college every community bathroom was well-stocked with the industrial sized paper towels and soap. By the time junior year rolled around the paper towels and soap had been removed and in its place was hand sanitizer. Apparently it was going to save a ton of money every year to make the switch. I missed my paper towels…but I digress from the issue of cleaning.
In this article different colleges highlight their belief regarding the cleaning of private bathrooms (meaning those not shared by a hallway, but by one room or possibly two rooms of students) and vacuuming student rooms. One college has made the decision to stop offering such services to their freshmen students, resulting in disapproval from some. One incoming student commented that it was one of the reasons she choose to attend her college.
As I mentioned, colleges run the gamut. I had my own bathroom one year, and although they provided me with toilet paper, it was my responsibility to keep it clean. I worked at a college that had 6 people living in a suite-style setting. They were expected to clean their bathrooms and had to provide their own toilet paper and cleaning products. What do I think about the question: Who should clean and how often? I have my opinions, but I want to hear from you. What do you think of this article? Do you think that the students should receive individual bathroom and room cleaning service, or do you think that they are old enough, and mature enough to handle that kind of chore on their own?
Off to clean,
Val

While I would love to have my own cleaning crew to clean my dorm room (who would't?), I guess I know it's really my responsibility and part of growing up.

Really- students have their dorm rooms and private bathrooms cleaned? What's next, will someone be there to carry their books to class and write down the homework for them in case they are not feeling good.
Students can clean their own rooms along with the private bathrooms-if they have responsibility for it, they are more likely to keep it clean to begin with. That's my opinion.
