Planning and Executing a Personal College Essay

(written by rising STAR, Krystal)

Writing the college essay isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. Try simply picking a topic you feel passionate about. Once you've got that topic, or have chosen from the topic choices they have given you, just begin to write and don't stop. Don't worry about anything but writing your thoughts down. You can edit it later, the most important thing is to get your thoughts down on paper.

When I wrote my college admissions essay, I picked a quiet room in my house where no one would disturb me and I just wrote. After I was done writing, I took a break. Walking away from my writing let me take a “fresh look” later.

When I finally went back a while later, I re-read my essay and began to make corrections. I didn't focus on spelling and grammar, instead I just wanted to make sure it flowed and I said exactly what I was wanted to say. In the end, I re-read it again and this time checked my grammar and spelling.

Having someone else read your essay is also a good idea. I had my parents and a few teachers read it. When writing the essay you don't want to forget about all the things your teachers taught you in your English classes. Remember a good essay grabs your attention in the first paragraph. The first paragraph also tells the reader what the rest of the essay will be about. The middle paragraphs or the body of the essay, will contain the details of what you are writing about. The last paragraph should wrap it all together.

For some foster youth, the essay can also be a great opportunity for you to talk about any problems you may have had in school due to being in foster care. Remember it is okay to talk about any challenges you may have encountered, but end on a positive note, since going to college will be a great new experience for you!

So, remember not to stress about the essay. It's not the only thing colleges look at when reviewing your application. Just take a deep breath and relax. Pretend you are simply writing another essay for English class and let your story flow!

Relax and Write,
Krystal
