NH Leads the Nation!
Postsecondary Education Opportunity, an organization that tracks access to higher education, recently published an article citing percentages of low-income college going-students on a state by state basis. The great news is New Hampshire leads the nation at 39.4% of 18-24 year olds from low-income families that pursue a college degree. This far exceeds the national average of just over 25%. All states in the Northeast beat the national average, but several southern states, such as Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana fell far below the average. To see how all the states ranked, click here.
This statistic may surprise some since NH is known for having one of the highest priced public college systems in the nation. Being ranked #1 for this demographic of student shows the commitment by the University System of NH to making college accessible to everyone. According to the USNH website, since the year 2000, the university system has more then tripled its undergraduate financial aid for students.
One way this additional financial aid is being awarded is through the Affordable College Effort Grant, better known as the ACE grant. This is a grant offered at the 3 residential university system colleges (Keene State College, Plymouth State University, and the University of New Hampshire). If after filing for financial aid, your family’s expected family contribution is below $1,000 your student is eligible for the award. The ACE grant covers full-time tuition, fees, and room and board charges. The program was originally set up to fund the first 3 years of college for the student, but it was recently announced that this program has been expanded to cover all four years of undergraduate study.
