Changes to the Course Catalog

The admissions process can be pretty competitive among colleges. Several schools may all be competing for one student that they would like to have on their campus. The schools that are able to land these students are typically seen as being “successful” in their admission goals.

It doesn’t stop there though. There is also competition among departments and professors within a college to attract students to enroll in classes they offer. This happens because there are typically a number of elective courses a student must take. These are typically humanities courses that may lack the appeal of the flashier “anatomy and physiology” type of courses. The course offerings can change on an annual basis, but in order for the professors to keep students flowing into their particular classroom, the courses have to appeal to the students.

This Boston Globe article discusses what changes professors are making to entice students to sign up for their classes.
