Is Your Career on the Rise?
This week, the President’s Council of Economic Advisors, released a report entitled, “Preparing the Workers of Today for the Jobs of Tomorrow.” The report projects where major job growth will be over the next 7 years. (They used 2016 as the projection year). If you’re a high school student thinking about what to major in that will provide a solid job outlook, consider these fields. The nice thing is that some of these positions require less then two years of schooling, so they even work well for an adult looking for a career change.
Some interesting facts from the report:
Healthcare is forecasted to have the most robust job growth by 2016. Interestingly, the largest amount of job growth within this field will be within healthcare support such as medical records and health information technicians. These are two careers that usually only require an associates degree. Jobs also showing steady growth are physical therapy and nursing. Also “green” occupations are expected to be on the rise as well. Jobs as environmental scientists or environmental engineers are increasing due to the demand for clean energy.
But there are jobs outside of healthcare and the “green” industry expected to increase as well. The manufacturing industry is expected to level out from its steady decline in jobs, but within the subcategories of aeronautical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, growth is expected. Jobs in these fields could require anything from 18-24 months of specialized training to a PhD.
The report also outlined the role and importance education plays in solidifying a career in these future job growth areas. The report states, “Occupations requiring higher educational attainment are projected to grow much faster than those with lower education requirements.” It also mentioned that “occupations that employ large shares of workers with post-secondary education and training are growing faster than others.”
