Graduating College Soon? Be Prepared!
For current college students, there is growing concern about what they will do after they graduate. Let’s be honest, job openings are hard to find for more experienced adults, nevermind for recent college graduates. There was an interesting article on CNN.com that discusses that particular issue. Click here to read.
So for those college students worried about your ability to be hired once you graduate, what can you do? First and foremost, distinguish yourself from the crowd. A great way to do this is by achieving good grades and filling up your resume with notable achievements. A good way to build the resume is to participate in an internship. By being proactive and working an internship, you are able to network with potential employers and attain practical work experience in your chosen field. Sometimes, college internships are where the first job offer comes from. If you can’t find an internship off campus, explore possibilities to find one on campus.
Another way to fill up your resume and make you more marketable is to volunteer. Volunteering allows you to gain experience, use your recently acquired education, and network – all while giving back to a local non-profit or just volunteering at a business!
Go to career fairs, and make frequent visits into the career services center on your campus. These are great resources to develop some contacts, and to learn how to prep for interviews, write resumes, and perform job searches.
Another great tip is to spread the word about your job search. Ask family and friends, former supervisors, instructors, coaches, etc. if they know of any job openings you might be a good fit for. Sometimes jobs are not always advertised online or in a newspaper!
