Time and Stress Management

The last week in August is finals week for Grad school. Needless to say, I am swamped with papers to write and tests to study for. Sometimes, I feel as if there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done. In times like these, managing your time is the best way to keep your stress levels down. I decided to do a little research on the topic of Time Management. Here are some tips to keep your cool in stressful situations and use your time productively:

  • Lose the “To- Do” lists. These lists would be great in an ideal world, one with no time barriers. Unfortunately, to do lists usually contain things we would like to do, not necessarily things we can get done in the timeframe we are given. Instead of creating a to-do list, create an hourly schedule each day. This way you can realistically map out your day, task by task.
  • Don’t over commit yourself. All work and no play is a sure way to stress yourself out. While it is important to be efficient, it is very helpful to have a period of free time each day to relax and unwind. Creating a rigorous schedule is a sure way to experience burn out.
  • Schedule more difficult tasks appropriately. If you know you are most energetic and alert early in the morning, schedule your more difficult work during this time. No sense in cramming late at night when you will be half asleep.
  • Know how to prioritize. The most important and difficult tasks should be completed first, when your concentration level is at its highest.
  • Exercise can be a great way to relieve stress, not to mention avoid the freshman 15. If you find yourself becoming overwhelmed with homework, try hitting the gym or going for a walk. You will return more energized and more focused.
  • Break up larger projects into smaller manageable tasks. When you are confronted with a lengthy project, chances are it can be done in portions. Dividing up the project throughout the week can help alleviate pressure situations that occur when you wait until the last minute.

Everyone has busy lives. When you are stressed for time, how do you make sure everything gets done without losing your sanity? Any activities that you participate in to relieve stress?

Don't burn out,
Tom

Exercise was the key for me. I participated in intramural flag football. I built the time into my schedule and not only did it help my stress level but I met some really cool new people!
